BioMatrix, LLC presented a poster titled "Image Based DNA Characterization and Clinical Application" at the recent Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Industry Forum: “Promoting Efficient and Effective Collaborations among Academia, Government, and Industry.” hosted by NCRR.
Motic has developed an image cytometry system for quantification of DNA amount based on quantitative image analysis. Key features of the system include automatic, slide-adaptive glare correction, color based separation of Feulgen stain from natural background for robust nuclear segmentation that adapts to varying illumination conditions and algorithms for automatic separation of touching nuclei. The system calculates about 30 diagnostically or prognostically relevant indices of DNA distribution that can be used to assist the evaluation of early malignancy or pre-malignant conditions. It can be applied to cytology specimens from cornea, conjunctiva and oral, cervical, bronchial and other mucosa preparations; to needle aspiration biopsies of salivary glands, liver, lung, etc; and it can be used to assist grading of tumor malignancy for carcinoid, prostate cancer and breast cancer. The system is the result of joint development of academic research labs and industry.
